How to Clean Furniture
Share
Cleaning furniture is essential to maintain its appearance, prolong its lifespan, and create a healthy living environment. The cleaning methods you use will depend on the type of furniture and the materials it's made of. Here's a general guide on how to clean different types of furniture;
1. Wood Furniture:
- Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth or a microfiber duster to prevent scratches.
- Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe down surfaces, followed by a dry cloth to prevent water damage
- For stubborn stains, create a mixture of mild dish soap and water. Dampen a cloth with the solution, wring it out, and gently clean the stained area. Dry thoroughly
- Polish wood furniture occasionally with a furniture polish or wax to restore its luster.
2. Upholstered Furniture (Fabric):
- Vacuum regularly with an upholstery attachment to remove dust, crumbs, and pet hair
- Check the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning codes. "W" means you can use water-based cleaners, "S" requires solvent-based cleaners, "WS" indicates both water-based and solvent-based cleaners are safe, and "X" means vacuum only
- For water-safe fabrics, you can spot clean using a mixture of mild detergent and water. Test the solution in an inconspicuous area first. Blot the stain gently; do not scrub
- Solvent-based fabrics may require professional cleaning for deep stains.
3. Leather Furniture:
- Dust or vacuum leather furniture regularly to prevent dirt buildup
- Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe down the surface, and then dry with a clean cloth
- For deeper cleaning, you can use a mild soap and water solution. Test in an inconspicuous area first and wipe gently. Avoid soaking the leather
- Apply a leather conditioner every 6-12 months to keep the leather soft and supple.
4. Metal Furniture
- Dust regularly with a soft cloth or duster
- Clean metal surfaces with a mixture of mild soap and water using a soft cloth. Dry thoroughly to prevent rust
- To remove rust, use a fine-grade steel wool or sandpaper to gently scrub the affected area, then repaint or seal as needed.
5. Glass Furniture
- Clean glass surfaces with a glass cleaner or a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar
- Use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to wipe down the glass, and then polish with a dry, clean cloth to prevent streaks.
6. Plastic or Resin Furniture
- Wipe down plastic or resin furniture with a damp cloth and mild soap
- For tough stains, you can use a mixture of baking soda and water to create a paste. Gently scrub the stain and rinse with water.
General Tips:
- Always check manufacturer's instructions and care labels before cleaning.
- Test any cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire piece.
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, or abrasive materials that could damage the furniture's finish.
- Use coasters, placemats, and tablecloths to protect surfaces from spills and scratches.
- Regular maintenance and cleaning can prevent the need for more intensive cleaning in the future.
